Just Say No To New Year’s Resolutions
Do you find it challenging to be present during this time of year where all you can think about is presents? Who could you possibly have forgotten to purchase a present for? Will the presents you ordered arrive in time? Will your family and friends appreciate the presents you labored over deciding just the right thing to get them? Did you exceed your ‘present budget’? Um, yep, that would be a yes for me 9 times out of 10!
Well, welcome to the other side of the Holiday season! As much as you want to enjoy the beauty of the holidays, the lights, the music, the holidays festivities….for most of us the holidays tend to bring on stress and allow little time for taking care of yourself. And, when you finally do make it through Hanukkah and Christmas you are faced with the demand to create a list of New Year’s Resolutions.
I am here to decrease that stress level. I will get right to the point and declare, I do NOT believe in New Year’s Resolutions. YUP, I said it! It’s out there! To me ‘New Year’s Resolutions’ are one of those life long habits that I would love to see you break.
Wait what? January is the month when the gyms are packed, ½ the people you know are on a “cleanse” or some sort of diet, we make promises that this is the year I will start (insert resolution here). Fast forward to February, and the gyms are back to normal capacity and most of us are frustrated and disappointed with ourselves for not being true to our “New Year’s Resolution.”
So how about this for a plan…..how about all year long we strive to be our best and healthiest selves? Now don’t get me wrong, I do think that the start of the New Year can be used as a kick start, but let’s make a deal here –make resolutions all year long! Set a goal, reach a goal, set your next, whatever month it is, whether it is January 1, May 17 or September 24th, it doesn’t matter! Goals can be set and met at anytime of the year! Be your best today and everyday of the year!
Below are a couple of quotes that are great to pull out of your pocket on any given day, especially if you are having a challenging one.
“Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.” Thomas Jefferson
“Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.” Winston Churchill
“If you can dream it, you can do it!” Walt Disney
If possible, please try to remember to stop, breathe, remind yourself what this season is all about, and do your best to enjoy your friends, family and healthy food and exercise!
